In 1974 he obtained the title of Master of Science (MS) in the field of veterinary physiology and pharmacology. In the same year he graduated from veterinary at Ohio State University. He did an internship of small animal internal medicine in the Animal Medical Center in New York, and a two-year residency in cardiology at Ohio State University Veterinary Hospital. Professor Bonagura for over thirty years is a certified ACVIM specialist in internal medicine and cardiology. Currently he serves as a head of the cardiology clinic at Ohio State University. His scientific interests include: echocardiography, hemodynamics, clinical pharmacology the cardiovascular system and comparative cardiology. He is co-founder of Cardiac Education Group, and author of one of the best textbooks Kirk's Current Veterinary Therapy, who now has the fifteenth edition.
